During the Great Depression, Aldo Biale sold eggs, walnuts, prunes and vegetables in the Napa Valley. Orders came via the party line phone, which was eavesdropped by nosy neighbors. A "black chicken" became the code name for a jug of Aldo's secret Zinfandel.
