Road 13 Vineyards
5th Element British Columbia Merlot Blend
Unfortunately my initial review got deleted, and I had written up one my favourite reviews in a long time. Slightly disheartening but oh well. saved this bottle for quite a few years and tonight was the night. It was decanted for 2 hours. Beautiful aromas of dark fruit, earthiness and leather, inviting you to taste the delicious fruits fermented within.
Initial notes of dark plums, dark succulent cherries and blackberries. There is a definite hint of dark chocolate. Followed by roasted red pepper and anise spices provided by the Syrah. These flavours paired well with the bold and slightly herbaceous tannins from the petit verdot. Finally smooth, lingering notes of finely aged leather, fresh tobacco leaf, hints of smoke and fresh earthiness danced along the back of my palate. This was truly an exquisite wine, achieving the rare feat of producing a bold, heavy, complex wine that is simultaneously well balanced and elegant. Served with filet mignon (medium rare), classic Caesar salad and Portabello mushroom stuffed with goat’s cheese and cherry tomatoes with a balsamic fig reduction. Easily could have cellared for another 5 years.

The label says that this Okanagan red blend is “..,Complex, rich, elegant and balanced..,”. I say with its intoxicating aromas, tastes of black berry, currants, smooth full bodied mouth feel and intriguing hints of spice this wine is simply “Damn Good” Cheers 🍷🇨🇦🇨🇦
