If you know me, you know I’m not much of a merlot fan. But this, as always, is delicious.

One of the strangest merlots you will come across...and for me that's usually a good thing. The nose is an almost shocking mix of caramel, tomatoes, boysenberry and a load of spice (especially black pepper). Also mint, eucalyptus and additional black fruits. It's quite a nose. The palette is not your typical merlot, either. Lighter in style and ripe with acid, it's hard to decide the proper place for such a merlot. You've got tomato, currant, black plum, dry earth and a fleeting glance of black olive. Bizarre, unique, and worth your time.

It is a testament to how much I enjoy wines from this small winery that you would ever find a Merlot so highly rated from the likes of me. That scene in Sideways, yep, that's me. This wine, however, is a wonderful example of terroir driven finesse (and it probably helps that it doesn't necessarily taste like a Merlot).

First wine from wine tasting trip to Paso... Great! Smooths out as it breaths.
