Brick red core, onion skin edges with watery rim. Tomato, tomato leaf, coffee and leather on nose. Fascinating tannin texture: initially feels like coffee grounds on the roof of your mouth, segues to supple mouthfeel and bright snap of black fruit on long finish. Beguiling.

Even this 1976 is one of most aromatically complex wines, filled with spice, coffee, cinnamon, chocolate, plums, dark cherries, truffles, wet earth and fresh flowers. The texture is other worldly. It has a richness and viscosity, as well as silk and velvet feel that no other Bordeaux can offer. Even though it’s produced from almost 100% Merlot, Petrus is one of the longest lived Bordeaux wines produced. The best vintages of Petrus demand 30 years before they become fully mature displaying their true essence, showing the reason why wine lovers pay thousands of dollars for a single bottle.
