2004 Mendocino Petite Sirah
This wine is indigo-black. No light is getting through the glass. A whiff shows some black fruit and some serious tar and forest floor. Smoke and leather play a role as well, with a hint of oak spice. As for the palate, don't tell me this is a 13-year-old wine. You can't kid a kidder. The wine is drinking extremely young, and showing its teeth in the tannins. These are jawbreaker tannins that could probably melt a steak by just pouring it on the meat. They do settle down a bit as the glass sits, but don't wait for this do become a “sipper.” Black currant and plums come through vividly, and the finish is long.

"Odedi"

Deep purple in color with a purplish rim. Doesn't show any aging.

Fruity nose of blackberries, figs, raisins, vanilla, sweet raspberries, smoke, chocolates, mocha, earth, wood, licorice, peppercorn, spices, leather, cloves, cinnamon and spice box.

Full bodied with medium plus acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, bell pepper, oak, vanilla, licorice, earth, graphite, herbs, spices and peppercorn.

Medium plus in finish with aggressive tannins and tart cranberries.

This 13 year old, Californian Petite Sirah, is a bit unbalanced but already enjoyable even by itself. Needs a few years in the bottle to calm down a bit. It has enough acidity and tannins to take it further in the aging process.

Big, bold and harsh with a tight mouthfeel and angular tannins. Spicy with nice complexity and very enjoyable. Not for the faint of heart, though. This is a teeth staining unfiltered red wine from Mendocino County. 5 hours in the decanter did not get it to calm down much.

This bottle had a trace of oxidation on the nose, but it did not ruin the experience.

14.5% alcohol by volume.
