Happy Halloween (again). Next up 2012 Nickel & Nickel. I chose opening the State Ranch (Yountville) bc it's probably the lightest and most approachable of the '12s from N&N. It's not one of their big Napa cabs: much more subtle. Some nice chocolate and blueberry notes

Nickel & Nickel 2012 State Ranch. Completely approachable right now. Consistent with the somewhat lighter style Cabs produced by N&N (for Napa, at least). Some wonderful blueberry and mint notes. I actually like this wine a little bit more than when I first had it a few months ago.

This wine has aged very gracefully. Did not decant but allowed to open in glass as we slow drank the bottle over 3-4 hours. Dark, full, dry, smooth. Outstanding!

Drinking the 2014 in 2021. Big bouquet, rich with oak, ripe fruit and cassis. Slightly tannic finish.

It’s been nearly 3 years since I last opened one of these. Has aged well! Full bodied, dry but not overly so, balanced. A velvety palate of black, blue, and red fruit. Outstanding!

Proof that all Cabernets are not created equal. This might do it for some but not my cup of tea. Powerful nose but a strong smell of alcohol in the background. Taste is tart cranberry and cherry with a lighter thinner feel and that alcohol is there creating a disjointed feel. Not my favourite and no different after 3 hours in the decanter.
