Interesting wine, aged for 12 months in Hungarian oak (60% new), aromas of dark fruits and floral spice. Full body with big blackberry flavors, pepper spice and toasty notes. Lively acidity, firm tannins on lingering finish ending with sweet notes of vanilla spice.

One of my favorite "serious" reds when I first started drinking wine, I was just looking back at my last couple pinotages and my ratings seem to be dipping. This one one was all sorts of meat when we first opened it. As I recall we related it to a wooly mammoth in a tar pit on a really hot day (after it had maybe stepped on some blackberries). Given about 45 minutes to open up the meatiness gave way to more subtle nuances, but the fruit never quite caught up with everything else. Not bad, but not great either.
