This is an absolutely stunning example of how Michigan can produce some of the most incredible reds you'll ever have. Just as the Finger Lakes region in New York consistently produces white wines which are new world on paper but old world in the glass, so the Lake Michigan Shore region will often do with its reds. This is part of the reason why Nathaniel names his wines things like "Left Bank" or "Right Bank" (in reference to the left and right bank of the Gironde river in Bordeaux) rather than use a more popular new world term like "meritage" instead.
