Monticello Napa
Estate Grown Oak Knoll District Pinot Noir
Oak Knoll, Napa Valley, California, USA

Had ‘13 & ‘14 and thought ‘14 has a better and bolder style. Founded by Corley family in 1970 and now produces 15,000+ cases of Napa Valley wines. Aged for 22 months in French oak (35% new), aromas of red fruits and spice. On the palate this full-bodied wine shows flavors of strawberry and red plum with some espresso and caramel notes. Lingering finish, soft fine tannins ending with notes of oak and sweet spice. ‘14 will develop nicely in the bottle, but it’s good now.

Medium finish, developing tannins ending a bit grippy but should ease up with a bit of bottle age.

Jay Corley, came to Napa Valley in 1969 seeking land to plant and grow an estate vineyard. Thirty-five plus years later, sons Kevin, Chris and Stephen manage the winery. On the palate strawberry and cherry flavors with pepper spice. Savory tannins, good balance with acidity, medium finish ending with mineral tones.

Strawberry snow cone nose that evolves into cherries in the winter forest. Big bold thoughtfully sun-ripened berries. Solid herbal full mouthfeel across the finish. Perfect Napa Pinot.

1 person found it helpfulMar 25th, 2016Excellent QPR @ $28 for the 2017 vintage at Rustic Bakery (always a lovely soot for excellent pastries, sandwiches, soups, salads..,and now also a bit of a wine shop?!?) Day 1: more the cherry of cough syrup at the very first sip but that quickly turned to more rounded cherry vanilla cola w/in five mins of aeration. RASPBERRY mid-palate and socko heat plus finish with that delightful taste of vanilla associated with time in Toasted French Oak barrels mingling with blackberry leaves and dark bing cherry in that longer (and hotter) finish than any other pinot under $40 I’ve ever found stateside. Day 2 (under argon gas) zero of the sweet cough syrup and all above deliciousness plus more rounded mouthfeel.
