Montagu
Hyde Vineyard Syrah
Solid 95. Almost want to give this one a 96. If I was planning to stay longer, this wine would have been within arm's length of me at all times. Full-bodied, correct Syrah done extremely well from Hyde fruit. Pours with a purple hue, with a delicate yet complex nose of herbs, flowers, mint(?), chocolate, and fruit. The entry of this wine is powerful. Lots of dark fruit with a hint of chocolate. The middle is balanced buy an herbal quality did I would stop really short of calling a funkiness in the traditional sense. It seems to touch down on these notes to give you just enough of a hint. Finishes with an earthy and Dusty resin, but it is quite fruity on the Finish as well. This was the most balanced wine on the table. Gave you every single characteristic you could hope to obtain in a Syrah. Bravo @Weston Eidson I will be buying me sommathis!! Has the structure to go 10 years.

Montagu expanded its portfolio by two this year to include a Sauvignon Blanc and a Syrah. Sticking with the goal of being single vineyard wines, the Syrah is from the famed Hyde Vineyard. This wine is absolutely deliciously impressive and is making a run at being my favorite Montagu wine. Big boy Syrah. Dark purple, almost black, in the glass. Big aromatic nose of smoked meats, blackberries, cedar. The texture is excellent, and is full of blueberries, bacon fat, chocolate and spice. This needs at least a 2-hour decant if you're opening it in the near future. The fact that this is $40 is an absurd value.

The sole Syrah vintage from @Weston Eidson at Montagu Wines. This particular bottle took a touch to open but once she did, look out! Flying!

Mar 24th, 2020I’ve since learned from @Weston Eidson that this is a one-off production. Sad to hear it but not sad to drink the wine! Very nice!!

Dec 27th, 2019I totally spaced this tonight, thinking this was a Pinot Noir as I pulled the cork, glancing down ‘oh no!’, well what’s a guy to do then. Best mistake I’ve made this month. Wow is this good! @Shay A @TheSkip @Weston Eidson blueberry compote, chocolate and spice in an inky package. The very first note I picked up after letting the glass sit for a few was a toasted marshmallow. Yum! 👍🏻

Oct 22nd, 2018My 600th note! I chose this because of the importance of this community in opening my eyes and palate to wines I would have never heard of. Encouraged by Mr @Shay A, this is a great warm climate Syrah. Full of body and red and blue fruits. There are notes of the Olive they can come through, but they’re slightly more in the background. Wonderful perfume. Very impressed. Nice job @Weston Eidson !
