The 2014 Merlot from Mayacamas is a classic expression of Napa Valley Merlot, which is all about precision and sheer class. It begins with striking aromatics of ripe dark plums and red currants woven together with fresh spring florals, graphite, crushed stones and traces of dried herbs all taking shape. On the palate this possessing a medium-bodied, with silky and refined texture leading to a tightly wound core. It thoroughly impresses as it effortlessly glides across the palate with incredible balance and finesse, leading up to the graceful finish. The 2014 is still showing a bit of restraint and needs some significant air contact before it begins to show, readers should plan on allowing this age-worthy Merlot at least a few more years to unwind before it hits its stride.

Damn serious Merlot. Beaming with bright briar fruit, minerality and dried herbs.

Briar berries, dried herbs, beautiful minerality. A pure and clean merlot.

Tasting at the breathtaking Mayacamas Vineyard. Very different expression of Merlot. Nose is so Beaujolais like, bright red fruits, hard candy, sweet spices and some green(stem) component. Medium body, high acidity, good structure, very dry, tannin is not soft and delicate enough but it is a solid wine overall. It will be a big surprise in blind tasting. 13.25% alc. 2014 vintage

A great expression of Merlot. Classic in every sense. Aromatically lifted, red plum, cigar, rustic herbaceous notes, a soft attack followed by grip and crushed rocks. I bet this ages beautifully

2014 vintage. Decanted and tasted after 1.5 hrs. Biggie mountain merlot with enuff tannins to lay single-home foundations. Dry and durty "food wine." Talk about needing a two decade time out. Restores my faith in Napa merlot. 9.23.23.

Beautiful purity of fruit. The acidity was a little too spiky at first so I waited a day. Much more integrated on Day 2 with nice grip and the earthy, savory elements came alive.

That mountain fruit just hits different sometimes.

The 2014 Mayacamas Merlot is both classy and opulent. The bouquet has been described as being deep and impressively complex, offering up notes of sweet dark berries, cigar smoke, dark chocolate, a fine base of soil and a nice touch of fresh herbs in the upper register. On the palate, this wine is bright, punchy and lively in the glass. This is a medium bodied wine that is really hitting all the high notes.

IMO Merlots can be spectacularly delicious. Tonight’s is a great one.

Not as fruit forward as I remember. Medium plus acidity with a tart finish but balanced.
