Matanzas Creek Winery
Sonoma Valley Merlot
A bit hard and musty upon opening. With air this began to soften and become more expressive. Didn’t show its best until day two when it showed nice balance of fruit and maturity.

Feb 24th, 2019I have always heard good things about 80's and early 90's Matanzas Merlots prior to the winery being acquired by Jackson Family Wines so I was excited to try this. Popped and poured and consumed over 3 hours. This had a musty nose that just seemed to be blowing off when we finished the bottle. Very little fruit remaining, but this had an earthy chocolate flavor on the palate that I really enjoyed. Nice color and no signs of oxidation. I have one more of these and will give it more air next time.

Dec 5th, 2015Wow what an old timer wine showing beautifully right off the bat. Beautiful plummy earthy rich nose into balanced still lively palate and firm texture into a harmonious and long finish. Pleasure to drink. A surprise for a 32 year old but probably from the glory days of this vineyard and varietal? Perfect for the leftover cheese ML brought weeks ago, Formaggio’s Twin Farm Goat Tomme Goats Milk from West Cornwall VT. Half bottle downed, unusual for me. Well, after three days of DE beer (quite good) and dinners alone!
