Johner Estate
Noble Gladstone Syrah
Another lovely bottle I enjoyed on my recent trip back to NZ. The 'noble' on the label tells us this is a dessert wine as the grapes were left on the vine until they started to get noble botrytis (also called noble rot). This is a type of fungus which affects grapes in moist conditions and if they grapes are picked at the right state of infestation they can produce beautifully sweet and concentrated wines.
This bottle of 2008 Johner Estate Noble Syrah is an amber orange-brown colour on the eye. The nose is full of aromas of ripe peaches, cloudberries and maple syrup. On the palate it reminds me of ribena, but an adults only version at 13%abv. It's not a sickly sugary sweet tipple as the blackcurrant & boysenberry fruit sweetness is balanced out by sour cherry acidity and ends with a clean finish. Thoroughly enjoyable nightcap.
