John Duval Wines
Entity Barossa Valley Shiraz
Barossa Valley, Barossa, South Australia, Australia

A perfect balance between oak and fruit (blackberry) from this Barossa Shiraz. Great winemaking from John Duval who has quite the CV. John was Chief Winemaker at Penfolds from 1986 until 2002 being only the 3rd custodian of Penfolds Grange after Max Schubert (creator of Grange) and Don Ditter. In 2020 this wine received Shiraz of the Year and 99 points from the James Halliday Wine Companion. The product of old vines in the Barossa. Luscious but in balance and overall - delicious.

Beautiful, voluptuous, bouquet of red fruit, wild flowers, with capsaicin on the tongue. I have a few more bottles of this. Paired nicely with grilled burgers from our local farm raised beef.

2008 vintage. In great shape and seems to have several more years of life in it. Stewed black cherry, baked blueberry, baked blackberry, tannins still have some grip and show tree bark, tobacco, and old tarragon.

Might be weird to say about a 6 year old Syrah in a screwcap, but I think this wine was a year or two over it's peak. Still complex just not as much power that comes with youth.

From Polar’s Australian wine tasting. Mellow with soft pliant Tannins in a more drink now style. Interestingly John Duval was chief winemaker at Penfolds for 29 years when most of the previous Penfolds wines just tasted were made. This wine made very differently to how he made them at Penfolds.
