Jasper Hill
Emily's Paddock Shiraz Cabernet Franc
Limited notes from my 70th Birthday lunch. From magnum. One of my favourite Australian Shiraz from Heathcote with the trademark earthiness and black fruits. Plush rich and savoury all at the same time.

Nov 19th, 2022Mid To Deep Crimson with a tawny edge. After decanting massive berry, earthy aromas with nuances of mint and cocoa. On the palate essence of Heathcote Shiraz - so much depth together with incredible length and fine resolved tannins. Drinking at its peak on its 21st Birthday. Dry plum notes at the finish. With time aromas of coffee/mocha developing. Like all great wines they keep changing after a 21 year slumber. The 15.5% ABV whilst high is not noticeable. Jasper Hill - a big reason for putting Heathcote on the map as a quality viticultural area. An example of why one cellars wines.

Jan 12th, 2020Mid crimson in colour. Tarry savoury berry aromas. On the palate medium to full bodied with earth tar and liquorice ~ typical of mature Heathcote. Tannins resolved. The 15.5%ABV largely hidden. Amazing intensity and flavour considering its age - powerful in fact - also some sweetness. Jasper Hill largely contributed to putting Heathcote on the map.

Aug 10th, 2019In the Langtons Outstanding category. Emily’s Paddock is an unirrigated 3.2 hectare (small) vineyard planted in 1975 and 1976 on pre-Cambrian basaltic soils. A beautiful wine with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc in with the Shiraz.

Sep 19th, 2018The 2nd of 2 Australian Icons from 1999. Jasper Hill is Heathcote Royalty and their Emily’s Paddock is an unusual blend of Shiraz with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc. Beautiful aromas of pipe Tobacco Earth and Cocoa. The palate is defined by an all pervading Earthy sweetness with Cocoa notes and great length, concentration and persistence. Cannot detect the high 15.5 % Alcohol just giving this beautiful full bodied Wine stacks of flavour. Like the Semillon this has a way to go. Next in at least 5 years.

May 27th, 2018Deep crimson with tawny rim developing. Earthy mineral masculine and muscular. Concentrated and long. Liquorice and Black Cherry. Sweetness. At its peak but will last at least another 5 years to reach 20. Heathcote at its best.

Jan 21st, 2018Mid Crimson - no tawny rim. Colour appears younger than 18 Years. Woody dusty undergrowth aromas. A sweet savoury plum delicious palate. Tastes way younger than 18 years. I could drink this all night - a fabulous old Wine from Jasper Hill, arguably the leading producer in Heathcote. Shiraz with a dash of Cabernet Franc (unique combo?). Heathcote Reds when young can be blockbusters but with age and the right terroir they are gorgeous mature reds like this example. Probably could go on for 5 or more years but why wait? Apart from the Grand Cru Burgundy Tasting in January probably the Best Red this year for me.

Mar 5th, 2017I have not tried Australian super premium wines in years, it was nice to meet the proprietor here and sample his Heathcote wines. Both made in the same way, picked at similar times but very different based on terroir.
