Henschke
Keyneton Euphonium Barossa Red Blend
Barossa, South Australia, Australia

Maturing nicely. Tasted side by side with the current vintage 2021. A lovely savoury nose. Matured in both French and American oak hogsheads - 15% new and 85% seasoned oak. Mulberry and pepper corn. I remember when this was Henschke’s entry level red and sold for around $7.

The first of 2 vintages of Keyneton Euphonium from the excellent 2021 vintage. This won the Trophy for best Shiraz Cabernet at the Barossa Valley Wine Show. 63% Shiraz 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Merlot. From 50 year old vines growing in the Eden and Barossa Valleys. Rich and Sumptuous - blackberry, cassis and sage. Beautiful fruit flavours and soft velvety tannins. A winner!

From the 41 wine lineup tasted blind at the Downs Club to find the new Members Premium Red - this was a late entry at No. 41. My brief notes when tasted blind “Sweet Red Fruited Perfume. A mid weight balanced palate with lovely ripe black fruits. I like this. “ In my top 5 from the initial tasting. Unfortunately not much love from the other tasters present much to their dismay when its identity was revealed. A high quality blind tasting as most of the candidates came from the excellent 2018 vintage. 65% Shiraz, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot.

Just a glass (and a small one at that)! After the Joshua Cooper Pinot this was quite sweet and pruney with lush blackberry and chocolate flavours Went well with the Waygu Beef dish. The quality of Henschke shining through even in their lesser Cuvées.

Inky ruby. A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe cherry and dark berries, pipe tobacco, vanilla, cola and exotic spices. Sweet, seamless and broad in the mouth, offering intense blackcurrant, cherry preserve, fruitcake and mocha flavors that are sharpened by a suggestion of cracked pepper. The floral and vanilla notes come back strong on an impressively tenacious finish that's framed by supple, slow-building tannins. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, December 2021)

This wine is showing why Henschke is at the top of Australian wine. Really good stuff

Never would have guessed 5 years old. Aussie, that I'd have guessed.
