Gravner
Bianco Breg Anfora Venezia Giulia White Blend
Wow. Lustrous amber hue. Melange of apricot, raw almond, orange blossom and orange oil, honey, damp leaves and spices. As it opens baked apples and apple pits emerge, followed by an expansive floral perfume. Bracing tannins on the finish and this is stunning now but still feels young(!), despite the years. So much energy. Seamless wine.

Aug 4th, 2020Burnished red copper in colour. A natural orange wine fermented on skins in clay amphorae in Friuli. An eclectic white blend of Chardonnay Sauvignon Blanc Pinot Grigio and Riesling fermented separately and aged together. Oxidative notes. On the palate very textural and full bodied with Quince and dried Apricot notes. Quite tannic for a white wine. Amazing intensity of flavour - probably too much. A challenging wine and to be honest an acquired taste. I have one left from 2006 which I will have in a few years.

Jan 22nd, 2019Intense, quixotic, quick-changing on the nose and palate. Fruit and savoroness balanced well. Superb.

Nov 28th, 2017Sempre difficile giudicarlo. Ma alla fine è un gran bel vino.

Nov 6th, 2017Bright, deep orange-yellow. Aromas of candied pineapple, orange peel, grilled banana, earth tones and lanolin. Juicy, smooth and concentrated, with well-integrated acidity giving shape to the herb, orchard fruit and honey flavors. Tactile and persistent, finishing classically dry and lemony but not harsh. Strikes me as richer but less nuanced and graceful than Gravner’s 2009 Ribolla Gialla. Made from a complex blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Riesling Italico (Welschriesling), this was fermented in amphoras with indigenous yeasts and no temperature control. The wine spent five months in buried amphoras, then six years in large oak barrels. (Ian D'Agata, Vinous, May 2018)

2 people found it helpfulMay 18th, 20182005 Gravner Breg Anfora. Very deeply colored. Not very oxidized nose. Many orange wine producers could learn something about oxygen management from Gravner. Absolutely delicious with a lobster, rice, pepper soup and a pressed pasta with duck ragu. Savory, firm, dried fruit aromas, but not overtly oxidized.

This bottle had notably more intensity and interest than the first time I had his wines. But I still don't... love love it. Intellectually interesting but not great really.
