Very nice touch of fruit. I'm typically not a fan but it's sutle.

Bought this at Coppola Vineyard, I prefer other Coppola options but this is a great dinner wine.

Excellent wine at the price. Great for casual get-togethers. Nice body but not heavy

First sip is bitter, keep drinking and flavor balances out. Has dry aftertaste.

I just started drinking wine and I have a sweet tooth! It's dry but not bad. Not bitter! I'd definitely try it again

I am most familiar with Syrah as part of a blend. I was surprised by this 2013 Single varietal wine from Coppola vineyards.
The colors is ruby that pales on the swirl. Holding up to my window looking out onto show covered ground, I can pick up the shimmer and appreciate the subtle color of this wine. Not red, not purple, not mixed. It is red and purple and mauve and ,and, and and.
Leather and rootbeer are my first impressions when I bring it to my nose. Warm and savory. You can smell that this is not going to be a super fruity juicy wine. The berries are going to be darker, and over ripe. There are going to be note of savory herbs and earth. You can smell earth and shitake. Denying myself a first taste to just breathe this in is both fun and torture. Everytime I bring it to my nose the Zalto dips straight to my lips. But every breathe new hints are revealed, so I dont sip yet. Pepper and faint burnt caramel, that earth come full force, but pushing deeper into the smell reveals a balanced alchohol that isn't as forward as the aforementioned notes, but carries with it on the exhale the lighter side of this wine. Redder, lighter, less leather and pepper, more bright and sweet.
Taste.
After having spent more time than I normally do thinking about smelling, the first taste was both expected and novel. While come of the assumptions were correct, other were not. I expected a much stronger Tannin feel. This is Suprisingly light on that side of the house. But dont let that fool you into thinking this is light on flavor. It is not! It is warm and savory, with spices and herbs, just like it smelled. But it has a dichotomy that is light and fruitful AFTER the swallow. This was not a wine I was immediately into on the taste. It was less tanniny (is that a word) then I had hoped it would be, less acidic, and less fruit forward. But.....
There is so much to unpack! Some books are good cause they are fun, and light and easy. Some are good cause they are hard and deep and leave you in a different place than before picking it up. (Haruki Murakami) This is a book that to me doesnt start strong but builds and is complex and if you allow it to be what it is finishes strong. And isn't that what we can all hope for in just about anything?
