Fascinating. I could instantly tell this was suffering from premox and/or less than ideal storage and most likely both (release price was $55 and I paid $4, so give me a break). It took a little while to put my finger on it, but this was extraordinarily reminiscent of the 1985 Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millenaires. I bought a case of the Millenaires about 5-6 years ago and blew through it, mainly because only half the bottles showed well, so I was opening a couple at a time. This is almost a spitting image of one of those 85's that was flat. Rich golden color, lots of white-wine sautéed mushrooms, a distinctively nutty pastry, and some faded tropical fruit with a notable Madeira quality.
