Ficklin makes the best domestic Port I’ve tasted, and the 19 year-old Late Bottle Vintage I polished off is a nice example. Sweet but not cloying or heavy; this dessert wine has character, complexity and nuance. Heady nose and correct color but it’s the memorable flavor that really counts. Also memorable was the “grape stomp” my family enjoyed at their winery in 2010; on a subsequent visit we took home a few bottles of fermented and fortified juice stomped by our own feet. Great family fun. Savored the 2004 vintage of this LBV with blue cheese, honey and home-baked bread.
