Fermoy Estate
Reserve Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon
See quite a few previous Delectable notes. Interesting back story about Fermoy Estate being served at the wedding of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark to Sydney girl, Mary Donaldson. This is my last bottle. A deep dark crimson. A lovely nose of blackcurrant, eucalyptus and herbs. Palate of medium intensity showing those aromatics. A pretty good Margaret River Cabernet from the Wilyabrup district. Probably doesn’t get the credit it deserves being overshadowed by its more famous neighbours in Moss Wood, Woodlands, Vasse Felix and Cullen.

Mar 29th, 2024See several previous notes. All the Margaret River Cabernet descriptors - bay leaf, blackberry herbal notes. On the palate cassis, capsicum and herbal characters. Suffice to say a good vintage from a great district for Cabernet. Had the last one 70 weeks later on 7th December 2022 - didn’t live up to expectations.

Aug 4th, 2021See previous note about Fermoy being served at the Danish Royal Wedding. A herbaceous Margaret River Cabernet with geranium, menthol and some green notes on the nose. Black currant, cassis - trace of chocolate on the palate. After an hour in the decanter it was drinking at its peak. Resolved tannins. Had my 2nd last bottle 29 weeks later on 5th November 2021. Similar notes as above with a note of eucalyptus.

Apr 16th, 2021Herbal aromas (typically Margaret River) with Geranium Capsicum and a touch of menthol. Some green notes - medium weight. Savoury wins out over Cassis and black fruits. Not in the upper echelon of Margaret River Cabernet. Just a silver medal. We went to the Cellar Door some years ago and the story goes that the Reserve Cab was served at the wedding of Prince Frederick of Denmark to Sydney Real Estate agent Mary Donaldson originally from Tasmania now Crown Princess Mary and one day will become the Queen of Denmark. Fred is a keen sailor who was representing Denmark at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and they met at Sydney hotspot The Slip Inn where Fred was flashing his Black AMEX so the story goes and was captivated by Mary and the rest is history.

Dec 20th, 2019Herbaceous - a little astringent needing a little more mid palate fruit. Some leathery notes. Firm tannins. First of 6 bottles which will need to be drunk in the next couple of years. Overall - expected more from the district and the vintage. Tried another on 1st April 2018 with consistent notes.

Feb 9th, 2018Fermoy Estate is one of the lesser known names in Margaret River but in a very good area with illustrious neighbours. From a good vintage this shows typical herbaceousness with some cassis. Good balance with fine tannins. Tried again on 26 Feb 2016 with similar notes. Fruit is restrained with fine tannins.
