I called this an Italian Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend in the blind, in light of the tannin structure and flavours. Strong cassis aromas lifted by a touch of volatile acidity, along with woody stems, tobacco, and new oak vanilla. Big and fruity on the palate, backed by oak spice and fresh acidity. The clincher for my guess was obviously the tannin structure - high levels of linear, U-shaped sandy tannins felt mostly on the gums. Clearly I was wrong. Whether that’s to do with a misidentification of structure or my lack of knowledge with Rioja, that requires more study. Another one glass-er here, before my palate became plain tired.
