Château d'Ampuis Côte-Rôtie Syrah
Chateau D’Ampuis is a delight across vintages.
The 2006 vintage is really superb! The wine is smooth and elegant, and seems to be all about balance and complexity.
At 14 the wine is rich and vivid and all the pieces just fall in place.
The nose is enchanting with notes of black fruit, earthiness, barnyard, chocolate, a touch of violets and a hint of floral notes.
Full round body, remarkably elegant with lovely acidity and a long delicious finish.
My score 92, drink to 2026

A little cool coming out of the cellar. Mid cherry in colour with a tawny rim. Light cherry notes and a tarry note but not giving a lot. On the palate barely medium weight. An hour after decanting it had gained weight with plumper red fruits also becoming more gamey and savoury. Fine persistent Tannins. I have always enjoyed Cote Rotie but this was lighter than I am used to. Tasted again 26 weeks later on 2nd February 2020. Musty dusty plums very mature. Meaty notes developed with air. On the medium weight palate resolved tannins. A sweetish raspberry note developing. Needed to be drunk. 92 points.
