Drinking the tail end of another dinner here. Losing a bit of vigour after two days opened, but still showing heaps of textural richness and chewy energetic fruit. Plums, cranberries, spice, and earthy nuances. Impressively long finish. Wow! Sadly, the bouquet was the let down, whereby the expectedly floral notes have disappeared at this stage and a light musk has started developing. Nevertheless, I can’t discount that this was an excellent aperitif.

Leroy hallmark floral nose , pure perfume. In the mouth it presented young and a little unsure of itself. A mixture of fruit , earth, iron and acid. Teased you with balance until the end , where it roughed you up a little. Time should help but again this is Pommard.

Another almost perfect bottle; so fresh and clean but earthen and funky. In a wonderful place of maturity with red and black fruits and savory spice, deeply moored wood, just hauntingly present and long. Love Lalou’s work when it’s on.

In one word: Revelatory 1991. Entirely elegant above and within the dense structure, it needed hours to open up, yet it was gone in an instant. Youthful begins to describe it, bright and red fruited, nowhere near ready. Hold, if you can.

Too young to enjoy. Mostly muscle and structure at this point. Maybe in 8-10 years.

A stunning 1999 Pommard from Domaine Leroy headed by the legendary Lalou Bize-Leroy. Incredible complexity on the nose, which evolved throughout the evening. First impressions were of subtle spice and flowers, forest and earth, alpine strawberries and red berries, dried mint and wild game. In the mouth, the structure is superbly focused. Silky, fruit-laden texture encompassed in fine tannins and stately power. This wine is precise, balanced, ethereal.
