Domaine Gourt de Mautens (Jérôme Bressy)
Rasteau Red Rhone Blend

The bouquet on the '07 Gourt de Mautens is intense, both sweet and savory, lifting from the glass with a dark wave of purple-tinged florals, black currant, fig paste, exotic spice, black olive, and crushed stone minerality. On the palate, the expression changes from earthy and savory to velvety and extroverted, yet with undeniably elegance, boosting incredible depth and richness to it's black fruit with a tug of brisk acid and hints of residual tannin creating a tactile feel. The finish is long, and I mean long, with sweet tannin lingering beneath notes of blackberry, dried plum, and spice, yet somehow still mouthwatering and fresh. What a wine!!!

The bouquet on the '07 Court de Mautens was remarkably fresher than my previous experience with masses of blue violet florals, currants, dusty black earth, sweet exotic spice, crushed olive, and savory-saline minerality. On the palate it was wonderfully silky and refined, boosting incredible depth and richness to it's fruit, as crushed stone gave way to violet flowers with a center-focused layer of dry extract that coated the senses, before balancing acidity revealed layers of ripe black fruit, plum and hints of white pepper. Sweet tannin saturated the senses throughout the finish, with notes of blackberry, dried plum, and spice lingering. A wonderful performance and just hitting it's optimal drinking window.
