Very pretty aromas full of florals and ripe fruit. Palate is soft and approachable, with acid and tannins mild but in balance. Paired with pot roast braised in cream of mushroom soup.

Copain 2011 Tous Ensemble Syrah - a ridiculous value at $21, well made, Northern Rhone-ish Syrah. Perfect for "glamping" :) Just ordered more

Purity, focus, elegance and power. The Tous Ensemble line really offers superb value and some of the most balanced wines Copain has to offer. The Mendocino Syrah is a serious wine with floral and savory elements and lovely fruit. Lavender, licorice, black pepper, mint and chocolate. Firm structure and long, sinewy tannins. Truly a gem at $20.

Lovely Rhône Ranger style with enough tempting black pepper to be Syrah but within the velvety & fresh structure which is cool California.

Holy crap! Haven't had the 2013 but this is an impressive, pure Syrah.

Fine Syrah de Mendocino! Enfin une cuvée moins boisé et distinguée...

Yes, that is a full size wine bottle. The glasses were insane: Italian hand-blown 1950s lead crystal with >2 litre capacity. Had I not known their history I would have thought they were novelty glasses; you can fit most of your face in them...

The wine was good - very forward and atypical of Syrah. Dense purple; almost Beaujolais-like meaty, richly fruity nose full of plumbs and ripe blueberry compote; furnished with healthy acidity but relatively low on tannin. Not very long and won't get any better but a very pleasant early-drinking wine!

This gets extra points for holding it together well past its recommended useful life (CT 2009-2013). Understated, but an extraordinarily complex and savory Northern Rhone style Syrah. Smoke, tar, coffee, dried black fruit, smoked brisket, green olive tapenade and soy sauce, and in a subtle, but piercing style. From my experience, Copain is one of California's most underrated producers.
