Dark Ruby red in colour. Red florals - rose petals, hint of geranium, leafy, dusty Bordeaux, cedar, elegant and refined. Way better than my previous two notes. Medium bodied with cassis and a little sweetness but overall impression is restraint and balance. Often it is easy to say refer to earlier notes on Delectable but on this occasion this was a much better tasting experience and what one would expect from such a producer in a good year. Perfect with Roast Beef last Sunday lunch.

On Saturday I conducted a Cabernet tasting at home with 8 others. The theme was 2009 Bordeaux v Margaret River. Tasted blind. See previous notes of 24 weeks ago. My least pointed wine of the bracket. Medium bodied at best - lacked Cassis fruit on the palate. Others in the group liked it.

Bright ruby red in colour. Initial aromas of mint and vanilla with cassis notes developing. Medium weight palate with an absence of fruit flavours save a little cassis finishing with fine grained tannins. A little simple for the good vintage and the esteemed producer - Pavilion Rouge being the 2nd wine of Chateau Margaux. One of my greatest wine drinking experiences ever was a 1982 Chateau Margaux. This was a million miles away from that experience. I think I would need to drink the remaining 3 bottles in the next few years. In summary disappointing.

WNH event number 4. Perfect Pizza Pairing bottles. Not a bad bottle in the bunch!

This was a fantastic bottle with our pizza. A wonderful year in Bordeaux with a more approachable and fruit forward style. Not a ton of leather and smoke...more ripe black and red fruit. Cherry pipe tobacco, and rose petal and violets. No problem popping these now! All smiles,

Deep garnet red with a touch of ruby. Layered nose with cherries, a bit earthy, cedar and dark gravel. Medium tannins (7/10) and medium plus bodied. Power on the palate with dried cherries, forest floor, mushrooms and minerality. Long finish. Drink till 2030.

For me, the connection to Ch. Margaux is in name only. While it’s a highly competent wine, there’s no hint of the elegance, nuance and intrigue of the flagship wine. While that might be related to vintage (2009 is not generally know for subtlety or nuance), I’ve had this wine in different vintages with similar returns. Fun for a night.
