Château Malescasse
Cru Bourgeois Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend
Good news: it’s drinking at peak. Bad news: it’s a Brett 💣. Grab some cheese and try to ignore the spritz

Mar 14th, 2019I bought 3 of these today on impulse as the deal was too good to pass up for a Bordeaux 11 years on. It’s smooth and palatable, but not anywhere close to complex. Haut Medoc gets an (undeservedly) raw deal when compared to the famous appellations, but sometimes you just need to appreciate what it is. A quick google search showed me this chateau is located between Paulliac and Margaux. It’s merlot-heavy for the left Bank but it adds a silkiness. Interestingly, I can taste the punchier grapes added for structure (Verdot and Cab Franc) and they haven’t integrated well but it would probably be a watery mess at this stage without them. Gravel influence is obvious and there is a lot of dust. Nice wine overall and certainly worth the $30 CAD.

Jul 20th, 2019Appearance: clear clarity, medium intensity, garnet. Nose: clean condition, medium intensity, aroma - cigar, black berry, fruitcake, stewed prune. Palate: dry, high acidity, medium (+) chalky tannin, flavour - dark cherry, chocolate, smoky, long finish. Conclusion, very good and approachable cab-sauv, great value for its price tag ($33), alcohol and flavour greatly integrated.
