Hump day and the weekend is looming. I picked up today the 2010 Château Calon Montagne-Saint Emilion. 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec.

The nose is very expressive with dark fruit, blackberry, black cherry, black plum, chocolate, cremé de cassis, tobacco, and rich loamy soil.

On the palate the dark fruit continues with blackberries, black cherry, black currant, green peppercorn, green bell pepper, violets and a good minerality.

This wine is full bodied with a velvety mouth feel, medium + acidity and medium + grippy tannins that lead to a long rich enjoyable finish. You can expect at least anouth 5-15 years before this reaches it's full potential. Let's have a safe rest of the week and get into a restful weekend. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Merlot is goood when you have mooooney. And 9 years of aging makes it a velvety-smooth blackberry delight.

This was probably a mediocre wine when released, so all the more impressive that is drinking reasonably well at 55+ years. Might have guessed burg blind based on the color, clarity and profile. More acid than fruit, but enjoyable. Although the vintage is 1959, I see references to gold medals in 1965 and 1966 on the upper label, so I presume this was a later release from the cellar. Base neck fill, but moldy cork that needed an ah so.
