Why do I always forget that Switzerland makes great wine

The Swiss name for the varietal in this little gem is “Heida”. As the story goes there’s a strong probability that as the vines were shared, passed and re-planted around the Swiss region decades ago, what began as Traminer evolved into what I’ve got under my nose. Lush pear and stone lead the way to a truly remarkably smooth and voluptuous palate. Meat on its bones, and in all the right, graceful ways. The palate leads (and holds) through the lengthy finish that’s balanced beautifully between a sort of creamy presence and juicy acidity.

Swiss Cave Caloz high altitude Savagnin, known locally as Heida Païen. Striking intersection of flowers, smoke & flint

In the #Valais region of #Switzerland, the #savagin grape from Jura is known as #heida or #païen (its pagan roots suggesting a long history). This 2011 from @cavescaloz is exquisitely aromatic with herbs and flowers on the nose, and a long honey finish on the palate. Nostalgic for last year's visit to Valais!

The grape Paien = Savagnin in Switzerland. Lightly fruited, soft texture, dense and fresh.

Sauvignin from Switzerland. The Jura fiend in me is very excited. Not as oxidized as a typical Jura, but certainly has notes of hazelnut and orange blossom.
