Valserrano Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend
A study of Spain - both textbook and experiential 🤓☺️ I mean, wine not?
.
.
As a ‘Gran Reserva’ red wine in Spain, made with Tempranillo and Graciano grapes, this wine must be aged for a minimum of 18 months in oak and 60 months total before release. There are even more stringent requirements in Rioja.
.
.
This producer aged this wine for 2 years in American and French oak casks followed by at least 3 years in the bodega’s cellar. Thanks to this, I am experiencing lots of deliciously toasty, cedar, vanilla, and baking-spice notes on the nose and palate. This is a full-bodied wine with good structure and pronounced blackberry, black cherry, and cassis aromas.
.
.
Valserrano, Rioja, Gran Reserva. Vintage 2011. ABV 14.5%.

May 28th, 2018Lovely Rioja; this wine is representative why I love the Douro and Rioja wines. Nice pepper and some spice accentuate robust profile, bold dry fruit like black cherry, black licorice and currant. Really nice and stands up well to warm stewed meats.
