Bodegas Torreduero
5 Meses en Barrica Peñamonte Tempranillo
Ahhhhhhh. After a string of disappointing Tempranillos, this 5-year-old bottle from a well-curated wine store in Nashville is deep, powerful and gratifying. Huge musty dusty caramel strawberry/tomato nose: glorious oak married to a bright Mediterranean grape. Surprisingly full body, with all the richness you'd expect from the nose joined by perfectly balanced acid and enough sweetness to carry the desserty aromas onto the tongue. Tannins are stout, and build up chewy and chalky, but they're not aggressive on the front end, and the initial mouthfeel is smooth, with hints of good structure. The finish is remarkably long, delivering more of that tomatoey strawberry fruit, spades of vanilla and toffee, and some vegetal and leathery notes to keep things interesting. This wine was a delight for me, and at $13, one of the best $/happiness bottles I've purchased.
