Bellwether
Riverland Montepulciano
Riverland, Lower Murray, South Australia, Australia

See previous Delectable notes for Bellwether Montepulciano. Bellwether is based In Coonawarra but these grapes come from the warmer Riverland area perfectly suited to Monte like its homeland of Abruzzo in Italy. This had a youthful colour - fruit driven with minimal oak influence. Medium to full bodied showing plums and aniseed. Can be drunk now or experience short term cellaring. Barb and I loved having a hand in making this wine when we did vintage at Bellwether in 2021.

Medium to dark Ruby. Dried meat and cherry, very savoury on the nose, earthy. Medium weight palate shows the same savoury earthy notes with red cherry. Great balance - nothing stands out overly. A good new world rendition of Montepuliciano with fruit from the Riverland in Australia but made at Bellwether In Coonawarra. A great accompaniment to homemade Pizza.

Immediately you can smell and taste this wine’s youth. Bright red cherries - earthy and mineral. Medium bodied with soft tannins. Wine is made by Sue Bell from Bellwether in Coonawarra but the fruit is from the Riverland. Barb and I helped make this at vintage when we spent a week of vintage in April 2021. Really pleased how this turned out. Only 120 dozen made.

From the warm Riverland area this is a very tasty Monte. Fresh and spicy. Smooth tannins with a slippery mouthfeel. A great bistro wine to serve by the glass. Postscript: The ultimate Pizza Wine.

Revisiting 2 years on.
An awesome wine and worthy of a Friday night tipple.
It’s been a good wine day.
