Sourced from Lodi, California’s Borra Vineyards, there are additions of 12% Carignane, 8% Petite Sirah, and 4% Viognier. I’m fond of this wine for its vividness, framework, depth, and freshness. Clos de la Tech 2009 Domaine Valeta Pinot Noir (SRP $62): Grown on a 2,300 foot ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains, this nicely focused Pinot Noir boasts ripe black cherry and red plum flavors alongside an appealing floral character and savory overtones of earth and light spice. It is full-bodied and well-balanced with a solid core of ripe tannins that melt into a long, pleasing finish. This is a good cellar candidate, but it is hard not to enjoy it now. Only 126 cases of this wine were produced.

Meeker Vineyard 2013 Winemakers' Handprint Merlot (SRP $45): Consumers who buy with their eyes -- and many do, would grab the Handprint Merlot in a jiffy. It is eye-catching and attractive; one of the most gorgeous bottles I’ve ever seen. And even better, the juice inside the bottle is delicious. Deep ruby-purple in color, and nearly opaque, this wine offers a poised combination of muscle, intensity, and depth. Concentrated flavors of black cherry and purple stone fruit are followed by red licorice, espresso, vanilla bean, and brown spices. A rich extracted style, chewy tannins give way to a long, fruit-driven finish. Though bursting at the seams, the acidity is firm enough to hold everything together.
