Enjoy an excerpt from his article and his notes for this week's top ten below! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ “The two most current northern Rhône vintages, 2017 and 2016, provide a fascinating study in vintage personalities, with 2017s bringing the thunder and the 2016s offering elegance and even understatement. Fans of large-scale Syrah are going to love the younger vintage, while those who seek balance and freshness will have a field day with the 2016s.” --Josh Raynolds, Northern Rhône 2016 and 2017 Reds: From a Whisper to a Scream, September 2019 1. Vivid purple. Spice- and smoke-accented red and dark berry preserve aromas are complemented by a suave floral nuance that builds as the wine opens up. Juicy, seamless and light on its feet; a minerally note adds spicy lift to sweet black raspberry, cherry and violet pastille flavors. Finishes supple and very long, with harmonious tannins adding gentle grip and shape to lingering dark fruit and spice notes. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, September 2019) — 5 years ago

Guillaume Gilles

Cornas Syrah 2016

Inky ruby. Smoke- and spice-accented cherry liqueur, blueberry and violet scents are complicated by hints of olive paste and cured meat. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering intense black and blue fruit, bitter chocolate and licorice flavors and a spicy touch of cracked pepper. The meaty quality comes back on the finish, which shows solid thrust, strong persistence and well-knit tannins. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, September 2019) — 5 years ago

Saturated ruby. Fresh black and blue fruits and violet on the nose, with a spicy element adding vivacity. Pliant cassis, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors open up slowly and become sweeter with air. Smooth tannins shape the clinging finish, which echoes the blue fruit and pepper notes. Aurélien Chatagnier

Cornas Syrah

Delectable Wine
9.2

Inky ruby. Mineral-accented aromas of fresh boysenberry, cherry, violet and olive paste pick up a smoky nuance in the glass. Deep-pitched black and blue fruit flavors reveal licorice, mocha and floral accents as the wine stretches out. Powerful but lively as well, finishing with repeating olive and floral character and slowly emerging, dusty tannins. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, September 2019) — 5 years ago

Domaine Louis Cheze

Cuvée Ro-Rée St. Joseph Syrah 2016

Delectable Wine
9.0

Bright violet. Smoke-tinged dark berries and cherry on the fragrant nose, along with a hint of cracked pepper. In a fleshy, forward style, showing good depth and energy to the gently sweet cherry and blackberry flavors. Smooth tannins frame the finish, which leaves a hint of spiciness behind. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, September 2019) — 5 years ago

Delas Frères

La Landonne Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2016

Delectable Wine
9.5

Bright purple. Powerful cherry, cassis, potpourri, exotic spice and olive qualities on the highly perfumed, complex nose. Sweet and energetic on the palate, offering impressively concentrated black and blue fruit preserve, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that unfold steadily with aeration. In a powerful but energetic style and quite primary now. Aeration brings up smoky bacon and floral pastille qualities that carry through the strikingly long, youthfully tannic finish, which leaves behind sweet dark and floral notes. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, September 2019) — 5 years ago

Château de Saint-Cosme

Côte-Rôtie Serine 2015

Delectable Wine
9.3

Dark ruby. Powerful, mineral-accented cherry and black raspberry scents are complemented by suggestions of exotic spices, violet and licorice. Supple and broad in the mouth, offering intense red and blue fruit liqueur, spicecake, vanilla and violet pastille flavors that become sweeter as the wine takes on air. The floral note carries strongly through the expansive, spice-tinged finish, which shows excellent clarity and velvety, slow-building tannins. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, September 2019) — 5 years ago

Mickaël Bourg

Les P'tits Bouts Cornas Syrah 2016

Delectable Wine
9.2

Bright purple. Lively blueberry, cherry, licorice, olive paste and smoked meat scents are sharpened by a subtle mineral quality. Smooth and energetic on the palate, offering intense dark berry, salty olive and floral pastille flavors that show very good depth and building spiciness. Finishes impressively long and precise, with resonating florality and steadily building tannins. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, September 2019) — 5 years ago

E. Guigal

La Turque Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2015

Delectable Wine
9.7

Saturated purple. Hugely perfumed aromas of dark berry preserves, incense, potpourri, smoky bacon and spicecake. Cola, olive and cracked pepper flourishes build with air. Youthfully and broad in the mouth, offering deeply concentrated, sharply defined black/blue fruit, spicecake, vanilla and violet pastille flavors that are brightened by a smoky mineral accent. Chewy and appealingly sweet on the extremely long, floral-dominated finish framed by youthful, slow-building tannins. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, September 2019) — 5 years ago
