This week's must-try wines are from Antonio Galloni’s article Piedmont: Beyond the Usual Suspects . Enjoy an excerpt from his article and his notes for this week's top ten below! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "With its plethora of appellations and indigenous grape varieties, Piedmont is one of the most intriguing regions in Italy. The range and diversity of wines is just breathtaking. Although Barolo and Barbaresco continue to command quite a bit of attention, the reality is most of us can’t afford to drink Barolo or Barbaresco every day. I certainly can’t. But Piedmont has much to offer beyond those famous areas, including so many wines that deliver superb quality for the money. Readers will find plenty of gorgeous, affordable wines in this report." --Antonio Galloni, Piedmont: Beyond the Usual Suspects, March 2020 1. Elio Perrone 2018 Moscato d'Asti Sourgal 2. G.B. Sottimano

Langhe Nebbiolo 2018

Delectable Wine
8.9

The 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo is fresh, vibrant and absolutely delicious. Sweet floral and red berry notes are front and center in this gorgeous, translucent Langhe Nebbiolo from Sottimano. In 2018, the fruit came from the Vigna del Parroco section of Basarin. Rose petal, lavender, mint and spice all linger on the finish. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, March 2020)

Bric Valdiana Roero Nebbiolo 2016

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2016 Roero Bric Valdiana is another compelling wine in this range from Almondo. Dark cherry, menthol, licorice, spice, cedar and blood orange are all laced together in a deep, flavorful Roero endowed with real character and tons of class. The 2016 needs time in bottle to shed some tannin, but it is super-impressive today. Sweet red cherry, mint, blood orange and star anise add the closing shades of nuance. There is a ton to look forward to. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, March 2020)

Aves Verduno Barbera d'Alba 2017

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2017 Barbera d'Alba Aves is another attractive wine in this range, although the greater impact of small wood does place it entirely in a different stylistic context relative to the other wines in this range. Black cherry, chocolate, spice, licorice and new leather infuse the 2017 with notable plushness and textural depth. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, March 2020)

Serra Barbera d'Alba 2017

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2017 Barbera d'Alba Serra is a delicious wine that captures the richness and radiance of the year while retaining a good bit of freshness as well. Dark red and purplish berry fruit, lavender, rose petal and spice infuse this Barbera with striking nuance and flavor. The 2017 spent eight months in neutral oak. This is such an inviting wine. Giorgio Pelissero

Piani Barbera d'Alba 2016

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2016 Barbera d'Alba Piani is powerful but also nuanced, with a good sense of transparency that gives the flavors definition and cut. Dark red cherry, lavender, spice and rose petal add brightness to this potent, richly constituted Barbera from Giorgio Pelissero. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, March 2020)

Barbera d'Alba 2017

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2017 Barbera d'Alba is a joyous wine that is sure to put a smile on readers' faces. Pliant, supple and full of character, the 2017 offers superb density and tons of pure deliciousness. Sweet dark cherry, plum, mocha and sweet spice are pushed forward in this engaging, arrestingly beautiful Barbera. Best of all, the 2017 is a superb value. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, March 2020)

The 2018 Moscato d'Asti Sourgal is beautifully lifted and delicate in this vintage, with a Riesling-like inner sweetness that is captivating, Hints of lemon peel, orchard fruit, mint and wild flowers add lovely shades of complexity. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, March 2020

Valmaggiore Nebbiolo d'Alba 2017

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2017 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is bright, fruity and absolutely delicious. The warm vintage seems to have given the Valmaggiore an extra kick of mid-palate sweetness, which is not a bad thing for a wine that can at times be a bit lean. Sweet red berry fruit and floral notes are nicely pushed forward. The 2017 will benefit from a few years in bottle, which will allow the aromatics to develop, but it is impeccable in its balance and super-classy, even in the early going. Giacomo Conterno

Cerretta Barbera d'Alba 2017

Delectable Wine
9.3

The 2017 Barbera d'Alba Cerretta is rich, unctuous and super-expressive, its recent bottling notwithstanding. Ripe red cherry, plum, blood orange, hard candy and spice develop in the glass, but what surprises me most about the 2017 is how polished and refined it has become during the course of its aging. Of course, the 2017 needs time to be at its best, but it is certainly off to a great start. The natural richness and intensity of the year are so well-balanced here, while the wine's breadth will emerge even more fully with time. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, March 2020)

Langhe Nebbiolo 2017

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2017 Langhe Nebbiolo is a real standout. More than anything else, the 2017 is exactly what a wine should be at this level: delicious and affordable. Sweet spice, crushed flowers, tobacco and dried cherry all develop in the glass. The 2017 is racy, effortless and undeniably beautiful. I won't be at all surprised if it develops very nicely with more time in bottle. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, March 2020)
