So, I ran into my buddy John Howard today at Costco who was insistent that I try the $7 Malbec Costco is selling. He couldn't believe how good it was for the money. Normally, I'm reluctant in these kinds of situations but hey for $7, I could always cook with it or toss it at that price. However, John tastes a lot of wine and there is a level of trust there as well. The fact is this wine while not my favorite is pretty decent. Especially, for the price point. I should also add there are few Malbec producers I really enjoy. Most just aren't all that complex and interesting. For this wine, I'm surprised at this price point they could put some new oak on it. Barrels are around $1200 per. So, a $7 wine with new oak is a surprise. Not sure how they get it pencil out. The wine shows some nice dark fruits; blackberries, dark cherries, a little blueberry, caramel, milk chocolate, wood shavings, coffee grounds, a little spice, a faint touch dry herbs, dry dark earth with crushed rocks, decent; acidity, structure, length, balance and finish. I Coravin-ed this tasting and will hold the bottle for a couple more years and give it a chance to evolve further.

So good. Full bodied, dark fruit, black cherry, cedar, nutmeg, meaty. Big tannin and Great structure. Smokin' deal at Costco marked down for $7.

Black cherry, raspberry sauce, cedar, leafy, forest floor, mineral. Hard not to drink the whole bottle in one sitting. Killer!

Nunca he tomado un vino malo q venga de un lugar bonito. Este viene de una de las bodegas mas bellas q conozco en el Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina y le hace honor a su origen.

Red fruits, smoke and tannins. A bit too smoky and tannic for my liking. We paired it with pumpkin soup - a nice pairing.
