Stromberg Großes Gewächs Riesling 2018

Merry Christmas to all on Delectable! The best drop during our wine squad’s pre-Christmas gathering has to be this masterpiece from Tim Frohlich. Such insane concentration, yet so filigreed and focused. The trademark reduction and vintage's ripeness gave it such an intense jackfruit character. Notes of herbs, spices, and ripe oranges too, as well as hints of mint and white florals. The palate was dense, silky, and straight up powerful, but never heavy - it remained juicy, bright, and saline throughout. And the finish here was just something else. It went on and on, filled with zingy citrus and a smoky, stony minerality. Really impressive stuff here and definitely a worthy contender (vs. Felseneck) for the title of Schafer-Frohlich’s top wine. — 5 months ago

I will say to me this does not have a pleasant nose. So fair warning. However, getting past it you will be rewarded. I can't say I have had a bunch of these but this one to me reminded me of a smooth, spicy Pinot. Acid was in check. Black fruits and touches of tobacco mix well. This drinks very easily so be careful to slow down and enjoy the wine. — 6 years ago

... BUT, was the last bottle of the evening, with many before it. Can't really remember. Gave this rating the morning after. Should re-try for more accurate rating. — 11 years ago

A red wine with a lot of power and potential, aged in large wooden barrels. Unique fruit, elegant tannin structure. Strongly recommended. — 3 years ago

From mature stands of vines, largely in the Stromberg, this was harvested around a week ahead of the corresponding Grosses Gewächs. Crushed stone is suggested already on the nose, along with pit-tinged peach and zesty grapefruit. The palpably dense palate displays strong piquancy and palpable stone suffusion to complement its rich, generously-juicy fruit. The bright finish, in typical Schäfer-Fröhlich fashion, really gets a purchase on the salivary glands. (David Schildknecht, Vinous, April 2019) — 5 years ago
