Good and very “winey” with a fairly fat mid-palate. Good but was hoping for more. — 5 years ago

I’m greatly aware of the love and hype for this wine. For me, it’s a nice wine but is overvalued. It’s velvety, ruby, rich and ripe. However, it’s alcohol level stings & burns the palate. I’ll never understand where the pleasure is in a burning palate. The nose has; deep currants, spice, some pepper, layered baking spices, blackberries, black plum, black raspberries, savory meats, anise, black rich turned earth, lavender, lilacs and violets for days. All of the above, matches the palate along with; dry crushed rocks, dry herbs, black licorice, black fruit tea, black cherry cola, dry stems and gritty volcanic minerals. The long finish is; big rich, ripe, elegant, balanced, but has burning alcohol. It’s been well crafted for the most part but not worth the alcohol burn. For this reason and it’s high price point, it’s a seriously over valued wine. There are many other great Syrah’s on the market for less💰💴 . However, they may not have the same cachet in the USA as SQN. It’s a simple choice in what you want, quality and value or quality & you are willing to pay extra for the cachet? — 7 years ago

@David T people who like a hot palate wine as I would call it, usually love salsa with their wine too! 😑😖😂

@Rob Brobst III For me, it’s not what I want in my wine. If I want a hot palate beverage, I’ll reach for Scotch. 🥃 😉

@Roman Sukley Roman, we exchanged comments on this SQN awhile ago. In which, we expressed differences of opinion on SQN. I am not looking to resurrect that conversation, but I did read something today that reminded me of our exchange. I was reading Neil Martin’s review of the 1998 Magdelaine. I copied over part of what he wrote in his review of this wine. Here is what he wrote...“But it is just marred by a burr of alcohol on the finish.” We disagree about the burn in the SQN and that’s more than fine. However, I only send this to let you know, I am not the only one that believes higher alcohol levels whether they call them a burr or a burn, it is considered a flaw in wine. Just on the outside chance you thought I was crazy for suggesting it in my review & comment. Cheers! Hope your enjoying some nice bottles.
