The new vintage at Battenfeld Spanier is always exciting. And 2020 is a doozy. Superb confectionary nose with kumquats, cotton candy, citrus, even more complex citrus and that tell tale limestone minerality. Really gorgeous penetrating minerality. So pure and deep. What a nose. I love love this wine. 2013 was our first ever white wine of the year. The vivid citrus character is really just gorgeous here. What a palate. A masterclass in elegance and skeletal structure. So clean, so mineral. Just washes your palate with minerals. Terrific inner mouth citrus aromas and also the tell tale vanilla extract and nougat flavors. Terrific energy and depth but what this really is about is the top top 1% finesse. A remarkable 1er Cru from Battenfeld Spanier. As it airs it gets sappier and juicier. But it retains this just monster finesse. Almost a 9.5. The finish is so clean and so pure. This is a stunning wine and unlike any Hohen Sulzen I’ve ever had.
Nose gets honeyed after air with Judy stunning and vivid fruit. Some papaya but juuuuuuust ripe. This is so good. Wow, that mineral wash combined with the gorgeous citrus fruit character is something else. — 8 days ago
Surprising amount of tropical fruit aromas. Really quite delicious and not too young with some time in the glass. Wonderful depth and mouthfeel and excellent excellent crispy acid. Hint of off dry. Really a very nice wine.
Note: this is actually Gruner, not Riesling. — 2 days ago
a wow wine. Floral and tropical, superb density on the palate with thickness while remaining light, restrained tropical fruits and citrus, superbly integrated acidity, just makes the salivary glands squeeze till they ache and empty. Really really great wine. — 5 days ago
Maybe the most delicious and important German Riesling we sell! And 2020 continues the streak of brilliance! Nose of nougat, minerals, apricot and herbs. So good. So stanky. Even some sponti this year! So clean and just amazing serene depth on the nose. Palate is just stunning. Tangy, citrus infused and honeyed with excellent clarity and finesse. Really wonderful finesse here. Lovely minerality and a stunning combo of skeletal purity and structure with a honeyed richness. No one can do that juxtaposition better than Battenfeld. Wonderful wonderful wonderful. Superb wine with wonderful juiciness and just so engaging. — 5 days ago
Vintage 2018 | Grand grüner veltliner, minerality, freshness. I find this a difficult grape. But my goodness what a joy if you taste a ‘Grand’ grüner veltliner. A bit, a little bit, sweetness, awesome balance. I have got no GV in the cellar, but must reconsider this.. for sure | paired with red mullet | at Monarh — 14 hours ago
Lorcher Krone Riesling Kabinett 1983 Rheingau, Germany
It is always interesting to drink these kind of old wines, but it is never a sure thing. This 38 year old Riesling is not at its peak for a while now.
Nice deep golden in color.
Medium bodied with high acidity.
Dry to off dry on the palate with lemons, citrus, limes, green apples and spices.
Tangy finish with limes.
This 38 year old is tangy and interesting, but not as complex as I wanted it to be.
Good by itself and better with food. A little oxidized on the nose, but not on the palate. Has a light cider feel.
Wasn't that pleasant right out of the bottle, but opened up nicely after 20 minutes of airtime.
Not balanced anymore, but still interesting and easy to drink.
I paired it with spicy Ahi Tuna and seaweed salad.
Bottled in September of 1984. A small production of only 3,690 bottles.
10% alcohol by volume.
89 points. — 11 days ago
Cherry blossoms, eucalyptus, and pine in the bouquet.
At first, a bit stiff. Then opens up to a crisp, balanced. Super dry. I prefer slightly more off dry to get the right balanced sip.
Honestly still prefer FLX compared to Old World in this price range.
If peaches and apples had babies.

Deep gold color in the glass. The aromatics were a bit of a rollercoaster…when still, it was filled with ripe honeycrisp apple and cinnamon dusted pear, but when you agitated it and tried to open it up, it yielded more unique notes like a touch of petrol and honeysuckle. The acidity on the palate was faint but enough to snap to prevent it from being too rounded. Rich in profile without being sweet, and plenty of tart spiced apple crisp on the finish. This expression is likely one best enjoyed younger due to the already somewhat round palate, but it sure is solid now with plenty of time to enjoy. — 5 days ago
There are some times when the only thing that will suffice is one of the world’s greatest Rieslings. Klaus-Peter Keller @kellerdalsheim is, in my mind, the undisputed master of the Rheinhessen region of Germany. The Keller family has been making wine for 10 generations, and the oldest parcel of Riesling they have has been handed down within the family since 1789. Keller, who apprenticed in Burgundy before studying enology at Geisenheim told me that he looks for “playful elegance” in wine. He wants it to dance on the palate. And I’ve never had a bottle of his wine that hasn’t made ME want to dance. This one marries lemon pith and lemon oil with Asian pear and mandarine orange peel. But all of these flavors are perceived through a quartz-like minerality that evokes the feeling of licking an icicle or exploring a glacial cave. Stunning clarity and incredible acidity makes for a profound glass of mostly-dry Riesling. — 13 days ago
