Tilled earth /mushrooms on the nose open into spice, then hints of red fruit, and faint floral/grassy aromas. At under $20, this wine hits way above its weight. — 9 years ago

Smokey, grilled meat on the nose. Opens up and reveals subtle red fruit. Good strong backbone/acid, light tannin. Went well with lamb braised in red wine. — 9 years ago

I sometimes buy random southern Italian wines, hoping for a diamond in the rough (a great under $20 bottle). This alianico was a bit tight, but had some red fruit. Light tannin, very acidic. Paired well with leftover braised lamb. Not disappointed. — 9 years ago

I served this with a New York strip steak. It was a bit of a wild card (I've never served a nero d'Avola with steak.) We were delighted. Earth and smoke/grilled meat on the nose. Once it opened, vivid red fruit (tart cherry). The tannins intensified the flavor of the food nicely, and the acid let the fruit shine through. Really fun. It surprised and delighted everyone. — 9 years ago
