Let’s talk about Brachetto 🍇
Brachetto is a north eastern Italian red grape variety which tends to produce highly aromatic, light-bodied wines. Swipe across to see a bit more about it in Darby Higgs #RareOzzies book.
There are only a few Australian vineyards growing and producing wine from it, including Soumah Wines in Victoria’s Yarra Valley.
Soumah produce Brachetto in two ways - a slightly sparkling frizzante version and this dessert style wine - the 2020 Brachetto Tranquillo ($32).
We were kindly sent this sample bottle to try (thank you!) and decided to chill it and match it with our Christmas dessert - a pavlova wreath with plenty of fruit 😋
In the glass this dessert wine is a pinky peach colour with juicy notes of fresh strawberries, pears and citrus on the nose. The palate follows suit in terms of flavours. It’s got fruit sweetness but this is balanced by acidity which makes it very yummy and not sickly sweet as some might worry about being a dessert wine. Very enjoyable!

2015 Brachetto d'Soumah (Yarra Valley)
The Yarra Valley version of Brachetto d'Acqui. As expected, beautiful rose water and strawberry notes on the nose, followed by hints of kale and mint. Sweet, high acid that sweeps in to clean up the palate, very creamy mouthfeel, the tasting notes are similar to the nose with berries and a prounced pink guava finish. So good on a hot day!
