2009 France! 50-50 Grenache/Syrah. Blackish brick red, showing some age. Potent red raspberry, strawberry jam and leather nose. Leans a bit sweet, but not at all flabby: comes across juicy, full bodied and very drinkable on the palate. Tannins are slow to develop, but eventually pack a chalky punch, drying out the finish as delicious raspberry jam lingers warm and long a like a fresh-baked pie. The fruit really is the treat here, blessed with enough earthy leather and minerally tannins to keep it from being heavy or one dimensional. Not anything austere or epicurean, but balanced, rich, and delicious. A shock for $12--I want to go back and buy out the store!
