Savage Grace
Boushey Vineyard Côt
Dark red, inky, high pigment extraction. Menthol and dark fruit aromas. Boysenberry and white pepper flavors, as advertised on the label. Slightly tart, almost lactic finish with some hint of spice. Relatively light on tannins which is in line with the Côt style of Malbecs-drinkability with a lighter and not robust touch. Yummy. After two hours, moderate skin astringency emerges, which explains all that pigment extraction.

Nov 1st, 2023Purple red, highly extracted pigment. White pepper and vegetal notes in nose, blackberry, plum flavors with white pepper finish. Give it time to open; there’s a sturdy, raspy tannin backbone on the finish that needs lots of time to mellow. Cherry and cranberry flavors also emerge after an hour

Mar 19th, 2022Dineen Vineyard, Rattlesnake Hills. This is a lighter style of Malbec fermented with native yeast, whole clusters. 11.2% alc/vol. Purple, moderately extracted pigment, very good clarity. Butter, tobacco and red fruit aromas initially. Raspberry and black currant flavors with length and a bit of cherry, moderate seed bitterness and skin astringency. Needs time to open. Acidity is light, almost rounded mouthfeel, fruit with length, but you need to give those tannins about 30 minutes minimum to dampen down. The carbonic maceration character comes out after 45 minutes, creating a mild Kool-Aid effect on some of the fruit flavors. (The effect is much nicer and more natural, of course, than those artificial flavors in Kool-Aid). A nice red for any occasion except a steak, in which case go for a full power Malbec.

Oct 19th, 2019Oh wow this is definitely a Malbec. Lots of white pepper the whole way. Nice wine from Michael.

Dec 23rd, 2020Medium clear purple with thin edges. A bit cloudy. Black cherry bats leadoff on the nose only to be joined tamed spice and nutmeg. Floral aromatics really elevate this. I could honestly just keep smelling this for an hour. This is the Winter Côt from Savage Grace, a weightier Malbec but this is actually quite light and fresh.
This is definitely much more Cahors than South America. Silky on its feet, the savory aspect is much more prominent it’s Argentinian counterparts. On the palate there’s a generous amount of spice and oak. A noticeable grassy streak livens things up to commingle with the fresh red fruit. One of the more unique Malbecs out there and easily a couple of notches above the rest.
