Salo
Hawkes Bay Syrah
Comparing 2 cool climate syrahs. Firstly the Salo from Hawkes Bay New Zealand made by Steve Flamsteed of Giant Steps fame. Peppercorns and spices on the nose with a ferrous note. On the medium weight palate it’s all about the pepper and spice. Love the style. We visited Hawkes Bay a few years ago and loved the Syrahs particularly the Trinity Homage. The Salo to be critical of what is a pretty good wine could do with a little more fruit.

Sep 17th, 2020Nose of peppercorns savoury spices and minerals Medium weight with plummy minerality coming through on the palate. Hawkes Bay NZ Syrah has always been a favourite of mine starting with Te Mata's Bull Nose Syrah 10 years ago. This Salo is made by leading Aussie winemaker Steve Flamsteed of Giant Steps in the Yarra Valley Tasted again 36 weeks later. Lacked a little mid palate fruit when compared to the Mt Langhi Cliff Edge which was a similar cool climate peppery Shiraz. I preferred the Langhi.

So very pretty, bright, perfumed fruit, showing classic whole berry and whole bunch characteristics... Yes, yes, yes

Mar 26th, 2016Lovely regional stalkiness and spice. Ever slow slightly outweighs the fruit though.
