Robert Renzoni
Vecchio Frate 'old friar' Lagrein
Great with a grilled pizza. Very complex flavor.

Jun 27th, 2021Hello my friends and followers. Tonight I am trying another fantastic wine from the Robert Renzoni family. This is the 2012 "old friar" Vecchio Frate red wine. All I can say is sour buttery spice with a peppery dry finish. The cork was perfect. The color is opaque- midnight purple with no transparency at all. Even at the bottom of the glass with three sips left, I cant see my hand through the glass. The legs on this wine are incredible. Thick, slow, and about 12 seconds to hit the surface. However, this must be decanted unless you like a tannic blast up the nose. After 30 minutes, and I admit, I had a glass un decanted. I couldn't wait. After 30 minutes there is black pepper, licorice, and lavender on the nose. The initial palate is tart like that of a green (not ripe yet) red delicious apple. A bit disappointing. However the buttery silky beginning and finish is awesome. There are hints of cigar, raspberry, and green banana. Am I scaring you? Well don't be. The finish is very dry and leaves you wanting more! This is so different. Its like eating hot wings. It hurts, but you cant wait for another bite, or in this case a sip. I cant say this is my favorite wine, but I love drinking it. I would pair this with steak and potatoes! Yum Yum Yum!
I give it a 9.5!!!! I will buy this again just because I want to age it. In 10 years it will be out of this world!
