Poupille
Côtes de Castillon Red Bordeaux Blend
Time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday.
A very pretty color of ruby with a wide reddish rim.
Strong nose of red currants, plums, light oak, medicine, spices, licorice, peppercorn, herbs, vegetables and dark coffee.
Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity and long fat legs.
Dry on the palate with cherries, strawberries, red currants, spices, tobacco, earth, vegetables, wood, bitter herbs, coffee and peppercorn.
Medium finish with firm tannins (once it opens up) and tangy raspberries.
This is a very nice Merlot from Bordeaux. This 100% Merlot, not from a great vintage, is showing mild complexity with a grippy mouthfeel.
This 9 year old is drinking very nicely now, and will be good in the next 5 years.
Needed time to open up properly and show the tannins, but good right out of the bottle.
Wine Enthusiasts 89 points. Thank you Wendy for sharing.
A good food wine that I paired with cheeses and dried meats.
14% alcohol by volume.
89 points.
$35.

Tried a new Castillon today. Poupille is a fantastic value at $30, and has a bit of new world flair in its fruit forwardness. It Is crafted from fruit grown on 35 year old vines - 100% Merlot. Smokey blackberries, red plum, lavender, and dried herb I'm the nose. Following, is a fruit packed, concentrated pallet exhibiting notes of black plum, green bell pepper, dark cherry, peppercorn, and a lush, lingering finish. This is a a hearty wine to be served with hearty dishes. Tonight's menu included two favorite things of mine to cook: French Onion soup, and Ratatouille Confit Byaldi for the main course. I don't think I could have picked a better wine to go with these dishes. YUMMM.

Aug 17th, 2022Poupille Castillon. A little closed with blackberry aromas emanating shily from wood/pine scents when stirred. Greenish and dry tannins. A lot of technique but no soul.

Nov 17th, 20182012: earthy, bit of leather, dry. And a peppery finish. Beef, fatty pork dishes (ribs?). Could overpower lighter fair. Nice traditional old world wine. Lovely, definitely a keeper.
