The complexity muddles up the the nose into a nice symphony of dark fruit to tobacco and leather with a nice whiff of peppermint and cedar. Call it cigar box, call it church pew, call it what you will bit it is gorgeous and perfectly balanced. I feel we drank this 2005 at its peak, probably to the day(that's how the 78s roll). On day 2 of this wine being opened, it seemed to fall flat on its face. While the nose maintained most of it's I trigue, the palate disappointed. I will attribute the lack of added sulfites to the poor oxidation handling. Day one still good enough to get this a great rating.

The latest vintage release of EC's estate Cab and it's marvelous. It definitely shows its youth, but with even a little bit of time to unwind this one starts to sing. As with past entries of the estate Cab I'm surprised at how ready it is to drink right now. You could easily set this down for several years, decades perhaps, and reap the benefits...but I don't think my remaining five bottles will be so lucky. It's just too good. The drought has not been a friend to California - including winemakers - but you can't help but admire what concentration it brings to a wine like this. Rich soil envelops dark fruits - the hot Paso sun is there, but towards the back. Solid acidity works against the firm tannins, making every sip a veritable battle in your mouth. Drink it now, drink it later, just drink it.

I'll save you some reading; I am a homer when it comes to this winery, so if you want to disregard my review I understand. But this winery is doing it right. And they've planted ungrafted Margaux rootstock. I won't lecture, but that's kind of a unique deal. The wine itself is ridiculously lively for a wine nine years old. Sumptuous dark fruits, black earth and hints of tobacco, mint and decaying violets (in a good way) greet the nose. The palette is both refined and fresh. Silky, silty tannins blend with stewed and tart fruit, along with a solid backbone of earth. It's going to be a challenge, but you really should try and get a bottle from this winery.
