A unicorn of a wine. Pinot Meunière better known as a blending grape in Champagne is presented here as a dry red from very old vines at Bests in Western Victoria. These vines were planted in the 1860’s by Henry Best. They are considered to be the oldest of this variety in Australia and possibly the world. The wine itself is mid Ruby in colour. Light to medium bodied but full to profound intensity - the best combination. All in perfect balance both aromatically and on the palate. A lovely complex blend of spicy aromas - hard to be specific Many tasters might miss the subtlety of this wine. I absolutely love it and today I received an email from Bests releasing the 2023 Old Vine Pinot Meunière. I don’t buy much wine these days but I didn’t hesitate to buy 3 bottles today. Best’s don’t make it every year. The perfect wine with Roast Chicken. Huon Hooke described this wine as “gobsmacking “ and gave it 98 points.

Notes of dusty cherry and sweet prune. Love this wine - light to medium weight. The Key here is Intensity without weight as I said in my previous note about this wine. From what are believed to be the oldest Pinot Meunière vines on earth. As the label says “magical complexities “. I could not agree more.

One of my favorite straight still pinot meunières. And yes I have a few. Old vines. And this stuff can age. Grab some and sock it away. Your future self will thank you.

Mid Ruby. Dusty Cherry Cedary aromas. Light to medium weight palate showing savoury leather, cherry flavours with very fine tannins. Fully developed at 23 years. A gorgeous wine - Intensity without weight. From the oldest Pinot Meunière vines in the world - first planted in 1868 and made in small quantities only when the vintage is good enough. Just bought 3 bottles of the 2016.

From vines planted in the late 1860s - the oldest of this variety in Australia. Lighter in style but with amazing length. Notes of an old chest of drawers together with Lavender, Soot, Tar, Earth and woody notes. Very balanced becoming sweeter with air. A thorough pleasure. Old Vine Pinot Meunière- a delightful anachronism.
