Tube-Wines

I’ve reported on WineTok here – but what about WineTube? YouTube is a 31.7 billion dollar biz, but comparatively, there isn’t much wine content there. Full confession: I hope you will check out my new channel Taste with Elle and give her the ol’ like-follow-bell. You see, given I would not call any of the other channels “wildly” successful, I figure there is a YouTube gap when it comes to wine, and the only thing I like more than talking about wine in print is doing it while being goth-y on camera. That said, there is some other really fun wine content on YouTube! So, without further ado, here’s your primer on what to watch, starting with… TASTE WITH ELLE https://www.youtube.com/@TasteWithElleC Subscribers: 25 (please help a girl out) I am planning on monthly videos, either providing some sort of educational wine content or tasting/sampling/reviewing wine, spirits and the occasional edible treat. Right now, I have a “how to taste” wine video up, as well as a blind-tasting to see if I can correctly identify different price points of some Cabs I had my helpful brother pick out for me. I’m having fun with it so far, and I hope you enjoy it! VINOUS MEDIA https://www.youtube.com/@vinousmedia Subscribers: 2.08K Vinous' YouTube channel features hundreds of interviews with many of the world's greatest winemakers, filmed originally for their subscribers and only recently made accessible to the public. Many of these videos are filmed onsite during critics' winery visits, while others are footage from Vinous' events, Vinous Icons and La Festa del Barolo. Finally, a series of fascinating, longer-form interviews were filmed via Zoom during the pandemic. These Vinous Live! interviews are the most in-depth conversations with iconic figures from the wine world as you are likely to see. This is an unparalleled resource for wine lovers to hear directly from the producers they love. WINEKING https://www.youtube.com/@wineking Subscribers: 685K Jay, aka the Wine King’s channel, is for you if you relish living vicariously through his food and wine adventures and don’t mind that he alternates freely between his native language of Korean and several others. Heck, even when I met him in person (I went on a nine-day trip through Italy with him and a bunch of other wine media folks) I was living vicariously. He speaks eight languages and, at 6’5”, can consume hefty amounts of food and alcohol with seemingly no ill side effects – adventurous living at its finest. KONSTANTIN BAUM WINE https://www.youtube.com/@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine Subscribers: 171K This is one of the more reverent channels. Baum is a Master of Wine, for goodness’ sake. Sometimes, he highlights a region or style. Sometimes, he splurges on a crazy wine for you to live vicariously through and/or smirk at what the wine is really worth. He has a nerdy but easy-to-adore manner about him – curious but also well-informed, which is sort of the best possible crossing of wine personalities. DR MATTHEW HORKEY https://www.youtube.com/@drmatthewhorkey Subscribers: 44.9K As far as I can tell, he is a wine enthusiast. He does lots of tasting and blind tasting and keeps it fun and light, but he also provides decent wisdom nuggets throughout. I recommend it! BON APPETIT https://www.youtube.com/@bonappetit Subscribers: 6.8 million Okay, so technically this is a food channel, but I’ll be gosh-darned if their wine and spirits videos, led by somm/winemaker Andre Mack (see his cheeky and delicious wines with names like Oregogne) isn’t a big draw to the channel. Whether tasting celebrity wines or comparing whiskies, he casually explains concepts while keeping it fun yet informative. WINE FOLLY https://www.youtube.com/@winefolly Subscribers: 115K The brainchild of Madeleine Puckette, this platform brings wine knowledge in varying levels, from basic to expert. Anyone who likes their wine nerdery in the form of illustrations and graphics will likely enjoy Wine Folly. Then there is Puckette herself – energetic, passionate, informed, and not there to judge but to share. Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) https://www.youtube.com/@WSETGLOBAL Subscribers: 63.6K Ah, yes, my alma mater! I still tune in occasionally for their very informative seminars, which, while dry, yes, will provide a primer/brush-up on various wine, beer, sake and spirit-related topics. This is useful, especially if you are still studying. Wine and Culture Los Angeles https://www.youtube.com/@wineandculture Subscribers: 665 Somm Devin Reed drinks wine and talks shop with his wine-loving guests. They pop some pretty fun stuff! SevenFiftyDaily https://www.youtube.com/@SevenFiftyDaily Subscribers: 6.29K It's definitely more trade-oriented, with fun blind-tasting segments that used to end with the super-taster in a superhero cape. They did away with the cape, but it’s fun to see the pros try to identify each wine. Mas Vino Please https://www.youtube.com/@masvinoplease/videos Subscribers: 167 A mixed bag of lifestyle and wine, this is Andrea Jaramillo’s account of her natty-skewed LA wine life. Very chill. V is for Vino https://www.youtube.com/@visforvino/videos Subscribers: 89.6K This channel has some of the best production value and longer-form videos to boot. Host Vince Anter is engaging and easygoing but discerning and full of knowledge. ASISomms https://www.youtube.com/@ASISomms Subscribers: 7.32K If you want to watch somms competing for the big prizes under grueling conditions, here you go. It is not slick, but it is serious and, at times, riveting. If I am missing anything, please let me know! Want to read more from Ellen?
